CLARIAH Call for Heritage Data research projects 2023

As announced at the CLARIAH & NDE Annual Conference, CLARIAH opens a call for research projects using data from Dutch heritage institutions. The call aims to provide access for researchers to new data and gives heritage institutions the opportunity have their data developed and disseminated.

The CLARIAH-PLUS project develops the Dutch research infrastructure for the humanities, as part of the European CLARIN and DARIAH research infrastructures. The CLARIAH infrastructure consists of a large variety of tools, services and datasets: generic infrastructure services (a.o. login, workspace), structured data, textual and audio-visual collections, and software applications and services that can be applied to these collections (a.o. search, analysis, annotation, enrichment, conversion, and visualisation). The infrastructure is rooted in a wide range of humanities disciplines, including linguistics, social economic history, media studies, literary studies, religious studies, philosophy and cultural history. Over the coming years, these resources will (also) be made accessible through the Ineo.tools user portal, which facilitates comprehensive searching, selecting and support for their use.

This year, in line with the 'Heritage meets Digital Humanities' theme of the CLARIAH & NDE Annual Conference 2022, the call focuses on data from institutions in the heritage field. All research output and datasets will be made available through the CLARIAH-infrastructure and Ineo.tools.

How do I apply?

You can apply by using the Call Proposal Template. The proposal must be written in English. The deadline for application and other important dates can be found in the section Important Dates.

Who can apply for what kind of data collection?

Targeted data sets/collections eligible for this call:

  1. are provided by any research and/or cultural heritage institution which is not one of the CLARIAH-PLUS Partners;
  2. through a researcher employed by an organisation that is eligible for funding by NWO;
  3. and are not already part of the CLARIAH infrastructure.

Please also provide an endorsement letter/mail by the research or heritage institution participating in the call.

What can be applied for?

You can apply for:

  • Personal costs needed to any form of data curation at the content provider to prepare the data collection to be integrated in the CLARIAH Infrastructure, in accordance with the standard NWO/VSNU rules and applicable tariffs (see here and here)
  • Material costs (one-time costs for server(s) or licence fee; the content provider is expected to be able to sustain the enriched data itself).

The maximum budget per grant is 35k for a max of 8 months.

How much budget is available for this call?

CLARIAH expects to be able to fund about three FAIR Data projects. The overall budget is about 105k.

What are the evaluation criteria for the FAIR Data proposals?

  • The data collection or dataset must be provided by a data service provider from a non-CLARIAH-PLUS partner institution, and not be already part of CLARIAH. CLARIAH PLUS partners are: Humanities Cluster KNAW, Huygens Institute KNAW, Meertens Institute KNAW, International Institute for Social History KNAW, Data Archiving and Networked Services KNAW, Dutch Language Institute, Royal Library, Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, Leiden University, Utrecht University, Radboud University, University of Twente, University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
  • The proposal must detail which kind of data curation is envisioned to be executed. Data curation can entail: enriching of metadata; mapping metadata standards; coupling datasets; publishing metadata/data as Linked (Open) Data to give some examples.
  • The proposal must detail how the data curation contributes to make the data (more) FAIR.
  • In particular, the proposal must detail how the data collection or dataset (after curation) will be harvested to become part of the, currently under development, CLARIAH Data Registry. This registry harvests dataset metadata from:

As dissemination, the following will be expected:

  • An entry about this dataset/collection in the CLARIAH website and in Ineo.tools is expected to be delivered at the end of the project.
  • To describe the expected impact/benefit of this project for the data providing institution as well as the Digital Humanities research community is a plus (See section 3.2. Re-usability, section 3.3 in the proposal template). This could be done in the form of an (envisioned) illustration of how to use the data - a kind of data teaser or data story.
  • Publication of the data (direct access or static data dumps) in a sustainable way is required either through the sustainable infrastructure of the application’s organisation or/and by making use of one of the Dutch certified repositories (such as DANS EASY, Dutch CLARIN centres, NDE centres which are CLARIAH partners).
  • During the evaluation, the distribution of the proposals over various types of datasets and possible tool application is taken into consideration. In other words: multipurpose use is a plus.

Which support is offered during the project?

As the CLARIAH PLUS FAIR requirements will be further developed during 2023, during the project a Data Steward team will be formed around each project. The Data Steward team consists of: Data Stewards/PI of the grant receiving institution, the CLARIAH Chief Data Officer, engineers from the CLARIAH and NDE infrastructure and selected members of the CLARIAH Interest Group Curation.

Who can I approach if I have a question about this call?

Send any questions about the procedure or call variables via e-mail: clariah@huygens.knaw.nl.

Where do I apply?

You can apply by writing a data proposal using the data project proposal template. Applications can be sent to clariah@huygens.knaw.nl.
